DMML's Jacqueline, SWE Vice President, leads an effort hosted and organized by SWE to Present the 2nd ever Lives and Lessons session about diversity in STEM, with panel discussions of invited academic and industry guests.  Dr. L (SWE advisor) was there to support this amazing effort and important dialogue.

Jacqueline presents a technical poster on her basalt research and wins 3rd place in the Collegiate Poster & Rapid Fire Competition at the World's Largest Conference for Women in Engineering and Technology in San Antonio, TX.  Way to go Jacque!

Bon voyage!   Dr. L heads to France for 5 weeks as a visiting faculty scholar, invited by colleague Prof. Pascal Forquin at the University of Grenoble and his SR3 lab.  Edge on impact tests of MAX phases and fracture model development are on the docket!

The REU program on Energy and the Environment that Dr. L heads up comes to a close with a wonderful well-attended research poster session presented by the participants - all DMML members pitched in  - everything from setting up poster stands to food pickup and setup.  Job well done all around!

July is on fire! Dr. L attends & presents invited 2 talks: one on Steve's work on the dynamic behavior of WC hardmetals at her first time attending the American Physical Society (APS) Shock Compression of Condensed Matter conference, and the other presenting Pete's at the Society of Engineering Science (SES) conference at Northeastern University of electromechanical behavior of piezoelectric ceramics.

Dr.L's 2017 NSF Summer REU has kicked off!  Things are extra busy in the lab as DMML welcomes new members REU Student Eleni, STAR Scholar Jacob, BS/MS student Zazzy, and visiting PhD student from Dr. Thompson's lab at U-Alabama Qianying.  Welcome aboard!

DMML's First PhD, Logan Shannahan, successfully defended his thesis entitled A Hybrid Experimental-Computational Approach for the Analysis of Dynamic Fracture.  Congratulations Dr. Shannahan!

DMML joins forces with the Nora Gibson Contemporary Ballet Company and the Franklin Institute where accelerometer data of movement was used as a mirror for choreographic expression in dance. This collaboration culminated in 2 SOLD OUT performances as part of the 2017 Philadelphia Science Festival with the premier of Nothing that is Not There.  Members of Drexel's Society of Women Engineers (SWE) presented pre-show demonstrations on dance mechanics. Read more here.

Dr. L was honored to judge the 2017 K'Nex Challenge alongside President and CEO of KNEX, Mr. Michael Araten, and the Pennoni Chairman, Mr. Chuck Pennoni, PE.  Three talented high school teams were tasked to create and assemble an environmentally friendly people mover from K'Nex in under 3 hours!

Dr. L gives an invited talk to the Ceramic & Transparent Materials Branch at the Army Research Laboratory in Aberdeen on Dynamic Fatigue and Fracture of WC Hardmetals, generously hosted by Dr. Jeffrey Swab.

Dr. L was invited to sit on the Scientific Committee for the 18th International Conference of Experimental Mechanics (ICEM) in Brussels, occurring July of 2018.

Along with Professor Charles (Stan) Wojnar of MS&T and Dr. Raymond Brennan of ARL at Aberdeen, Dr. L hosted a Symposium at the 2017 MACH conference, put on by Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute, entitled Field-Assisted Mechanics.

Dr. L visits the University of Southampton in the UK during Drexel's spring break to be an external examiner for a PhD defense, as well as collaborate with Professor Fabrice Pierron and his amazing research team on the stress gauge approach to dynamic behavior of WC samples.

Drexel's Pi Tau Sigma chapter that Dr. L advises, hosted the national PTS convention with over 200 honors mechanical engineering students from the across the country.  DMML provided lab tours and Dr. L presented at the banquet and had a table for discussions on graduate school with students.
